Mower Attachment Linkage

There are a number of things you should consider when purchasing a 3 point mower for your particular lawn or other mowing project. Of course, the size and type of job will be a determining factor when choosing the proper equipment you need. You will want to be satisfied that the mower and associated accessories can be easily maintained while providing years of service. Then, once you have the determined the proper power equipment for your specific needs or in the event that you have on hand a particular brand of equipment with a 3 point setup, you must look at the several hitch sizes or categories.

Generally there are 4 categories listed as ‘0’ thru ‘3’. These indicate sturdier lift arms and attachment pins for the higher category number. The number 0 rating is the lightest and number 3 the heaviest.

These categories are basically determined by the horsepower available from the tractor or power source. There is some overlap in the determined horsepower from one category to the next. The following table shows recommended hinge pin size in relation to category designation and horsepower.

Category         Horsepower                 Top Pin Diameter        Lift Arm Pin Size

0                      0 to 20                                           5/8”                           5/8”
1                      20 to 45/55                                  3/4”                           7/8”
2                      45/55 to 90/95                            1”                               1-1/8”
3                      90/95 and above                        1-1/4”                       1-7/8”

Other considerations when buying a 3 point mower or other type mowers include:

  • number and diameter of blades
  • discharge location
  • type and design of caster wheels
  • thickness and sturdiness of deck (gauge of deck material)
  • bearings and shafts
  • lubrication fittings, sealed bearings
  • cutting width and height
  • PTO coupler and connection types
  • Wheels and tires
  • Safety equipment, chain guards, etc

One item of importance often overlooked is the availability of replacement parts and supplies such as bearings, gears, wheels, linkage, hinges and pins and other items. Look for a comprehensive operators/parts manual which includes a through parts list with part numbers and possibly a price list. There are also aftermarket suppliers where you can find other helpful information.

It is very helpful if the 3 point implement manufacturer has a web site and/or a toll free number for contacting them. Some mechanical and mower maintenance shops have personnel available to answer questions and give technical advice. Simply asking these questions before buying the equipment could save you some inconvenience later on.

Be sure to check out manufacturer guarantees and warranty information. In some cases you may consider a maintenance program, if you can justify cost effectiveness.

Picking a lawnmower seems an easy task. Go to the home improvement store and find one that’s a good deal right? Well it’s not that simple. If you have been to a home improvement store lately you probably has seen dozens of different mowers available. Keep reading and learn three things to consider when buying a lawnmower.

The first thing you should consider is what size lawn you have. This will determine what size of mower you need. A small lawn can get by with a small push mower while a larger garden, a lawnmower to justify. With an average size lawn you might choose a larger push mower or maybe a self propelled times. If you decide a lawnmower, you have a place to save. They take up much space.

The next thing to consider is whether you want to rake clippings, bag them or mulch them. Some cities do not allow for the removal of lawn grass in landfills. If this happens, you will either like them or compost bag and you’ll want a mulching mower. Mulching Mowers cut the grass into small pieces that are easily broken down in your garden.

The last thing you want to consider before you invest in a mower if you even use it. If you hate doing the lawn work that you might be better off just that money towards a lawn service. There is no point in buying a shiny new machine just to rust and gather dust in the garage.

Hopefully this article has a few things to consider. Take a moment and think about your decision because once you have made your purchase you are stuck with it for some time.
